The team that was saddled with high expectations as a result of their deep pockets this past offseason is floundering. The problems are immense and began long before Elton Brand went down with an injury. Even with Elton in the lineup, it looked as though the Sixers did not have an identity. Did they want to run or implement a half court offense? Was Brand better suited as a high post player or as a player catching the ball on the block? And who on the team is going to stretch opposing defenses enough to create the space needed for an effective entry pass to the post?
Truth be told, none of these questions were answered prior to the season and Mo Cheeks payed with his job. With Tony DiLeo at the helm, things have not improved much. This team still lacks an identity and with Brand sidelined with a bum shoulder it may not find one for quite some time.
For the team being, the Sixers need to tread water until Brand gets back. They can start by trimming back on Dalembert’s minutes and giving those to Marreese Speights. Of course, a rookie is not the answer to all of the Sixers’ problems, but Dalembert has been downright dreadful. From there, the players need to be held accountable–especially those that are getting paid $80 million (I am looking at you AI).
While they may not be able to find an identity until Brand gets back, the Sixers better start making some changes. Perhaps tonight against an equally woeful team in the Clippers the Sixers can start to put some of the pieces together. We shall see.
